What is glitch text?

Glitch text is text that looks like it has been corrupted by a computer error – letters that appear broken, stacked with stray marks, struck through, mirrored, or replaced by look-alike symbols from other alphabets. It borrows the visual language of a failing screen, a scratched VHS tape or a broken video game, and puts that feeling into plain text.

Glitch text styles you can create

Not every glitch looks the same, and this generator groups its output so you can pick the right kind of “broken” for your use.

Tips for glitch text that actually works

• Short beats long. Glitch text is a highlight, not a body font. Three to five words is the sweet spot for a caption; one or two for a name.
• Match intensity to the platform. Usernames and titles need the lighter styles. Posts and captions can take the heavy ones.
• Check it on a phone. Some stacked-mark styles render taller on iOS than on Android or desktop. If it overlaps the line above, pick a lighter version.
• Keep the keyword readable. If the glitched word is your brand or handle, make sure someone can still tell what it says – or keep a plain-text version right next to it.
• Don’t glitch everything. Contrast is what makes it work. One glitched line next to plain text looks deliberate; a whole paragraph of it looks like a broken page.

Why glitch text sometimes shows as boxes or gets removed

Glitch text depends on the device being able to display the specific Unicode characters used. On a modern phone or browser that is almost never a problem. Three things can still go wrong:

1. Old devices or fonts – if the system has no glyph for a character, it shows a box (□) or a question mark instead.
2. Platform filters – some games, forms and apps strip combining marks to prevent abuse. Your glitch text will come out plain or with gaps.
3. Character limits – stacked-mark styles use several code points per letter, so a “10-character” glitched word may count as 40 or more. Twitter/X, usernames and SMS all count code points, not visible letters.

If a style gets rejected, switch to an overlay or symbol-swap style from the same list. They use far fewer characters per letter and pass most filters.

Is glitch text a real font?

No – and that is the useful part. A font is a file that has to be installed on a device before anyone can see it. Glitch text is a set of existing Unicode characters, so it displays anywhere those characters are supported without anyone installing anything. It does mean you cannot change the “font” of glitch text the way you would in a word processor; the look is baked into the characters themselves.
