What People Usually Mean by Weird Text

Most people searching for a weird font generator have one specific look in mind — the corrupted, overflowing kind:

That’s zalgo text, also called cursed text, crazy text or glitch text. It’s the most-copied weird style on the internet, and it’s what the Zalgo, Glitch and Freaky tabs above produce.

But “weird” covers more than that. There’s scrambled text that mixes a different alphabet for every letter, upside down text that reads backwards and flipped, strikethrough and distorted styles, and genuinely strange letterforms drawn from alphabets most people have never seen. Each has its own tab.

How Zalgo Text Actually Works

Worth understanding, because it explains everything else on this page — including why it sometimes breaks.

Unicode has a category of characters called combining diacritical marks. They’re the accents and marks that sit above and below letters in languages like French, Vietnamese and Navajo — é, ñ, ạ. Critically, they don’t occupy their own space. Each one attaches itself to the character before it.

And there’s no limit on how many you can attach.

So a with one mark is á. With ten it becomes a̴̡͖͛̃͌. Stack enough and the marks pile above and below the line, spilling into the text around it. That vertical overflow is the entire zalgo effect — it isn’t a font, an image or a glitch. It’s ordinary letters wearing far more accents than any language would ever use.

Three things follow from that:

It’s still real text. Underneath the mess, c̸̢̛̬͖̑̈́ is just c plus marks. It can be copied, pasted and searched — which is why zalgo travels between platforms when an image never could.

It bleeds into neighbouring lines. Because marks don’t take up vertical space, heavy zalgo overlaps the lines above and below. That’s a feature to people using it and a nuisance to everyone reading around it — which is exactly why platforms started filtering it.

More marks means more risk. Every mark is a separate character that a device needs a font for. Light zalgo renders almost everywhere; heavy zalgo is one of the most fragile things you can paste.

Weird Text Styles You Can Generate

Zalgo / cursed — stacked diacritics, from a light shimmer to full corruption. Pick the intensity by how far down the tab you go.

Glitch — strikes and overlays through the letters rather than above them: g̶l̶i̶t̶c̶h̶. Reads as broken rather than possessed.

Freaky — distorted letterforms combined with light corruption. The middle ground when full zalgo is too much.

Upside down — reversed and flipped: uʍop ǝpᴉsdn. Reads properly if you turn your phone over.

Mixed — a different alphabet for every character, so no two letters match: 𝔴Ⓔ𝕚ᖇ𝓓. Chaotic without being unreadable.

Weird letterforms — genuinely unusual alphabets from corners of Unicode most people never encounter. Strange, but still legible.

Hacker / leet — w31rd. The oldest weird text on the internet.

Where Weird Text Works — and Where It Gets Blocked

This matters more for weird text than any other style, because it’s the one platforms actively fight.

Works reliably:

• YouTube comments and video titles
• Reddit comments and post titles
• Tumblr, Twitter/X posts
• Instagram and TikTok captions and bios
• WhatsApp and Telegram messages
• Notes, documents, emails

Filtered or restricted:

• Discord — many servers run auto-moderation that deletes zalgo, and some strip it from nicknames. Heavy zalgo in a username often gets you renamed or kicked.
• Most games — Free Fire, Roblox and similar reject stacked marks in names outright.
• Sign-up and verification forms — anything with strict validation.
• Anywhere with a character limit — each mark counts as its own character, so a ten-letter zalgo word can consume 100+ characters of a 150-character bio.

That last one catches people constantly. If your bio is rejected as too long when it looks short, that’s why.

Two more honest warnings. Heavy zalgo can lag or freeze older phones when a long block renders. And screen readers handle it terribly — a blind reader may hear a stream of mark names or nothing usable at all. Use it for effect, never for anything anyone needs to read.

Why Weird Text Sometimes Shows as Boxes

You’ve probably seen weird text that looked right on your screen and turned into empty rectangles on someone else’s.

It happens because a style used characters — usually rare combining marks — that the reader’s device has no font for. The characters are perfectly valid; the device simply has nothing to draw them with. And you’d never know, because on your phone it renders fine.

Weird text is the worst offender for this, for two reasons. It uses the least common corners of Unicode by design. And font fallback resolves a letter and all its marks as one unit — so if no single font on the device covers both the letter and every mark stacked on it, the whole cluster collapses into a box.

We rebuilt this part of the tool specifically. Every style here was audited against the Unicode blocks devices commonly lack; the marks that most often failed were removed, the effects that stacked marks onto incompatible letterforms were restricted, and font coverage is loaded for the rest. The result is weird text that stays weird on other people’s screens instead of turning into rectangles.
